Next of Kin
Lin, a young document-restoration specialist, is hired to reassemble a single orphaned claims file on the abandoned floor of a defunct insurance firm. As she sorts shredded paper in raking afternoon light, a portrait slowly surfaces from the strips and turns out to be her own mother at twenty — the same face from the framed photograph in her hallway. Lin then discovers the policy, taken out the year she was born, was torn apart and hidden inside the company by her mother, who trusted the firm's inevitable collapse to carry the claim forward to the daughter who would one day learn to put torn paper back together.
