The Mother Dies, and the Youngest Child Says the Line That Cuts Deepest

Addie dies one night while Darl and Jewel are out with the mule wagon on a delivery job, neither of them home. Vardaman has gone down to the river to fish; he catches a big one and watches it die. He runs home and finds his mother dead too. The two deaths collapse into one in his head, and he cannot pull them apart. The next day he stands at the window and shouts it out for the whole town to hear: My mother is a fish.

It isn't a metaphor. Faulkner means it literally — a five-year-old's mind genuinely conflating a person and a fish. That confusion is the truest shape death takes for a child who hasn't grown the language for it yet. Every one of the book's fifteen narrators understands death in a way that's entirely their own, and Vardaman's version is the rawest, the most primitive, the hardest to argue with: dead is dead, the same for his mother as for that fish.

On the Road: Heat, the Mule Wagon, and a Coffin Starting to Smell

The family hitches up the flatbed wagon, loads the coffin, and sets off. Down the dirt roads of 1920s Mississippi, under a punishing sun, the body swells a little more with every day that passes. Faulkner refuses to romanticize any of it — he brings in the buzzards, the smell, the family's bickering. A funeral sounds solemn; in practice it's sweaty, festering work. Partway there, a storm hits and floodwaters take out the bridge. The wagon fords the river anyway. The mules drown, the coffin nearly goes under, and Cash breaks his leg in the chaos.

What does a broken leg mean out in the country in that era? No real doctor, no cast, no surgery. The family scrapes together a sack of cement from somewhere, mixes it with water, and pours it straight onto Cash's broken leg — a home fix meant to hold it in place. Cash goes white with pain, but he's a carpenter, and his first thought is that the angle is wrong, the load will sit unevenly — he's still running the lumber calculations even now. The cement leg ends up worse than the break itself. This is how the family handles everything: patched together on the spot, and worse for the patching.

One Son Burns the Coffin, Another Saves It

The family takes shelter overnight with a farmer they know. The next night, Darl sets something alight — he burns down the barn. He isn't losing his mind; he knows exactly what he's doing. This funeral has gone past absurd, and if it keeps going it will drag everyone down with it, so burning the coffin and ending it here seems like the only mercy left. The barn goes up, flames lighting the sky. The first one into the fire is Jewel — the hottest-tempered of the brothers — who says nothing and simply hauls the coffin out of the flames with his bare hands.

This scene is the most tangled knot in the book. Darl acts for the good of everyone; Jewel acts to save his mother, at any cost. One is the clearest-headed judgment in the whole novel; the other is the most reckless, bodily devotion. Faulkner gives no verdict — he just lets the reader watch two brothers stand in the fire over a coffin. It matters here that Jewel isn't Anse's son by blood; he was born of Addie's affair with the preacher Whitfield, and his fixation on that coffin runs deeper than anything tying the rest of the Bundrens to their mother. Everyone in the family knows it. No one says it.

In Jefferson, Three Things Come Due, One After Another

The coffin finally goes into the ground. Addie is back in her own people's earth. But her sons pay for the trip one by one. The farmer whose barn burned reports Darl, and the family sits down to decide what to do about him — and the one who saw this family most clearly is the first one they commit, together, to the asylum. Faulkner plays the scene ice-cold: the person who understood the Bundrens best is pushed through the gate by the hands closest to him. On the road he was the outlier. Back home he's the sacrifice.

Dewey Dell, pregnant, walks into the town drugstore looking for something to end it. She's kept it from the whole family the entire trip; this was the plan all along. The clerk doesn't give her medicine — he takes advantage of her instead. She walks out with the pregnancy still with her, the errand still unfinished, and now this on top of it. For her father this trip was a free errand. For her eldest brother it was a broken leg. For her, it's a humiliation she'll carry in silence.

Anse Settles His Accounts, Down to the Penny

With the burial done, the family gets ready to head home. Anse's trip into town, ostensibly to bury his wife, has actually accomplished the following: he's fitted himself with a new set of false teeth, the thing he's wanted his whole poverty-stricken life; he's picked up the gramophone Vardaman had been eyeing the whole trip; and on top of both of those, he's brought back a woman, who now stands beside the coffin, and whom he introduces as the new Mrs. Bundren. The wagon going home is the same wagon, just with one more passenger, one more set of teeth, one more gramophone in the parlor. Addie's coffin is already in the ground. She leaves with nothing.

Faulkner will not write death as rest for the soul. He writes it as buzzards, as a rotting body, as cement poured on a broken leg, as a new set of false teeth. Death here is material, physical, and he uses detail specific enough to be uncomfortable to remind the reader that a person is, in the end, meat. Few writers in the Southern tradition go at it this hard. Next to The Sound and the Fury, which steeps itself in time and consciousness, As I Lay Dying is wilder, cruder, more like a mule wagon grinding forty miles of dirt road. Read the two together — one takes a family apart inside its own head, the other drags a family down a road — and you have most of what Faulkner's South looks like.

Worth Reading Even Once You Know How It Ends

Even with the plot laid out, there are things the text does that no summary can. The most obvious: the experience of being pulled apart by fifteen voices in turn — the same river crossing told through Cash's calculations, Darl's near-telepathy, Jewel's fury, Vardaman's fish, and what it feels like to have all four collide. You cannot get that secondhand. There's the rhythm of those very short chapters, the shortest one just five words, landing like a nail driven in one blow. There's the texture of the Southern speech itself — Faulkner writes the Bundrens' grammar bent, broken, misspelled, and that roughness is character in itself. And there's the physical discomfort of the cement leg, the rotting body, the circling buzzards — Faulkner is a master of refusing to romanticize, and that discomfort only registers when you're reading the sentences themselves. Once you already know the plot, who dies, who profits, who ends up committed, you're free to read it again and just listen to how he tells it.

Faulkner's real feat isn't writing a tragic funeral. It's making you watch a family drag that funeral into a full-blown disaster, and then turning to grin at the reader when it's over.
